Who Will Be Charged for Domestic Violence Shooting on Vernon Street?

Tanice Mejia & Bartholomew Lucas

Thirty-two-year-old Bride’s Alley resident, Bartholomew Lucas remains hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, recovering from a gunshot wound to the groin. The injury was inflicted by his common-law-wife, Tanice Mejia on Wednesday morning, around nine-thirty, at a house at the corner of Magazine Road and Vernon Street in Belize City. Police confirmed today that there are a number of documented incidents of domestic violence between the couple and the gun violence was the result of an argument minutes earlier. Mejia reportedly got hold of an unlicensed nine-millimetre pistol and fired three shots, one of which caught Lucas on the crotch. As Lucas recovers, Mejia remains in police custody; Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino says that the D.P.P. will determine what if any charges will be levied.

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, CIB, Belize City

“Police arrived on the scene and found Bartholomew Lucas, a thirty-two-year-old resident of Bride’s Alley suffering from what appeared to be injuries to the groin area. He was transported to the hospital by police and what police know at this time is that Mister Lucas and his common-law were involved in a domestic dispute and somewhere in that dispute a firearm was produced and the injuries were inflicted on him. We have the common-law of Mister Lucas in custody and the matter is being investigated.”

Duane Moody

“Sir are any of these persons licensed firearm holders?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“No, not that we know of.”

Duane Moody

“So it is safe to say that it was an unlicensed firearm that was used to commit the crime?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Yes.”

Reporter

“Are there previous reports of domestic violence at the household?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Yes. There have been numerous reports from both parties at the Domestic Violence Branch.”

Duane Moody

“Anything to suggest whether it was self defence?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“We have obtained statements from both parties and those statements are being forwarded to the D.P.P. for her directives.”

Three expended nine millimetre shells were retrieved from inside the lower flat of the two-storey house; the gun, however, has not been found.
