BFCA says BFF Must Stay in its Own Lane

In recent weeks, the Belize Federation of Fishers’ raised concerns about a number of developments in the fishing industry.  The federation called out the Gillnet Task Group, saying that gillnet users are jeopardizing the livelihoods of fishermen.  Well, another organization, the Belize Fishermen Cooperative Association, has come out swinging saying that the federation cannot make such claims on behalf of fisherfolk. According to Sidney Fuller, the recent statements by the B.F.F. do not represent the concerns of the membership. Here’s more from the two representatives of the BFCA.

“We from the BFCA, now represent the entire fishing industry of Belize. We are the only recognized and legal body that represent the now existing three cooperatives; Rio Grande, Northern and National. And also all the other fishers. We represent them when it comes between government and the fishing industry as the legal representation, social and welfare, and whatever matter pertains to fishery. We represent them.”

Daniel Dawson, Chairman, Belize Fishermen Cooperative Association

“The Fisheries Department has been a very instrumental partner for the fishing industry. We rely on them to give us all the information and data and surveys so that we could keep a good accountability of our stock. It throws that indifference because it misinforms other fishers about the industry. The true people who give us that information is the Fisheries Department. We have been in existence of over fifty years and we still depend on the information from Fisheries which we do appreciate very much because it gives us a guideline to all fishermen.”
