A Day of Testing at Stella Maris During Disability Week

Disability Week is being celebrated countrywide and in Belize City today, a special clinic was being held at Stella Maris where children with learning disabilities, including dyslexia, were being examined by a team of medical professionals.  Doctor Marco Tulio Mendez administered several of those tests using an E.E.G. machine to find problems related to electrical activity in the brain.

“From this morning, we started to provide some lectures to the staff and also to some of the parents here at Stella Maris.  Basically we did nutrition and also talked about autism by a special guest speaker and then I really provided the lecture with learning disorders, functions of the brain.  How the children definitely start to learn to speak, what is the process, some of the areas that are damaged with certain lesions and of course how they manifest in children with dyslexia, difficulty to read or difficulty to speak and also with Attention Deficit Disorder and autism, just to name a few.  Of course that was this morning and this afternoon we are providing some assessments on some children and also doing some brain tests and it was a very interesting case.  There was a girl that has epilepsy and she has dyslexia, so we wanted to prove if that epileptic discharge that she was presenting was also contributing to her dyslexia and that is the patient that we had there.”
