Taz is Murdered Near Majestic Alley, Police Say No Connection to Francis Gill Execution

Arthur Flowers

Three persons are in detention for the murder of Arthur Flowers, a well-known car washer stationed at the Majestic Alley Taxi Stand which is located not far from the Queen Street Police Station in Belize City.  Taz, as he was commonly known, was executed at the corner of Handyside and Queen Streets by a gunman who fled in a waiting car. The homicide was caught on surveillance camera and police have since impounded the getaway car. His family and investigators are perplexed as to the motive behind the cold-blooded murder on Monday afternoon. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Arthur Flowers, Taz, as he was known to many, was well-liked among cabdrivers at the Majestic Alley Taxi Stand.  Every day, he would be seen in the area with his bucket, ready to clean whichever vehicle required his service as a “washman”.  Monday afternoon was no different, until someone sprang on him as he stood at the corners of Handyside and Queen streets.  A single shot was fired at close range.

Chester Williams, Acting Commissioner of Police

“Yesterday, I think sometime around three p.m. or thereabout, police were called to the corner of Daly Street and Queen Street where they saw the lifeless body of one Arthur Flowers.  He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.  He was taken to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Police investigation into that matter so far reveals that Flowers was standing at the corner of the lane when he was accosted by a lone gunman who pointed a gun at him and fired one single shot which caused the fatal injuries.”

Flowers’ brother, who spoke with News Five off-camera, says that they had agreed to meet up earlier in the afternoon but that a phone call from his girlfriend changed those plans momentarily.

Voice of: Steven Flowers, Brother of Deceased

“I mi deh with my girlfriend.  She call me.  Me and my bredda mi wahn heng out, I mi gwein go hail ahn, but she call me and I gaan gaan sih she and when I come back one ah di taxi man dehn tell me dehn just kill my bredda, check.  I just mi pissed off when dehn tell me that.  I noh know mein.  Watch ya, di police dehn dah di back alley, dehn have checkpoint deh.  I hyah dehn young bwai pull up long time, check, dehn pull up long time and park front ah di place weh paat everybody stay, check, wait fi somebody but ih look like dehn cyant wait no moh, yoh get di sense, dehn gaan out so and gaan deal with my bredda.”

It was initially reported that Flowers’ killer fled the scene in a vehicle that was waiting nearby.  Police have been able to make some inroads by pursuing that lead.

Chester Williams

“We have since detained or intercepted a vehicle that we believe was involved in the shooting and have three persons detained that we are investigating.”

Duane Moody

“Now sir, I know it’s in its initial stages, but any idea as to what could have motivated this crime?  We know that it is dangerously close to Majestic Alley.”

Chester Williams

“Yeah, we do not have a definitive motive at this time and we don’t want to speculate.  The investigators are out and they are trying to gather as much information as they can to be able to ascertain a motive and as soon as one is determined then we will be surely more than willing to update the media in our next press brief next week.”

Duane Moody

“It is not known if Flowers was a part of any gang?”

Chester Williams

“No, at this time we believe that Flowers was a car wash person, so we are trying to see what may have motivated his murder.”

According to Taz’s sibling, he was never one to be involved in any criminal activity, nor did he bother or interfere with anyone.

Voice of: Steven Flowers

“My bredda noh mess with people mein.  My bredda noh do that, he wash ih vehicle and everything like that, he hustle ih lee thing from people.”

Isani Cayetano

“Could it have been a situation where he was either mistaken for someone else or they felt as though whatever may be going on between the two groups here in Belize City, he may have been a part of?”

Voice of: Steven Flowers

“Well, like ah seh, dehn mi di wait fi somebody else right, but ih look like dehn have short a patience and tek it outta my bredda, check.  My bredda noh mess with nobody.  My bredda da from fi dehn same block, yo get di sense, my bredda no mess with nobody none at all.”

When asked if Flowers’ murder which happened almost fourteen hours after the execution of Francis Gill in Coral Grove was related, Deputy Commissioner Chester Williams said that there is no evidence to link the two crimes. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
