Ballistic Vests Distributed to Police Officers

A few days ago, the top brass of the Belize Police Department was gifted five hundred pre-owned bulletproof vests by the Miami Dade Police Department through the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police. ComPol Allen Whylie said that the vests would be distributed to frontline officers, first responders and members of operational units such as the Quick Response Team. This was triggered by the murder of police constable Osbourne Martinez who was shot and killed when he responded to an armed robbery in progress at Belcove Hotel in Belize City. On Monday, more than a hundred vests were handed over.

“In each districts there is a quick response team that are the first to respond for any call for assistance in terms of major incidents and then we will also be looking at the relief personnel who would ordinarily be the first responders in terms of preventative patrols.”

“How would you respond to anyone who say that some of these vests would not fit some of these police officers. These hefty police officers that are part of the first responder’s line?”

Allen Whylie

“What I will tell you is that we have catalogued the vests. We have put them in terms of sizes, we know the size of the officers, and those officers have been assigned those vests. So while there might be a few glitches today, the officers will get their appropriate size vest.”

“Explain the process of accountability; I see them signing out here. Explain how they will have to account for the use and possession of this equipment so they are not just lost in the wind.”

Allen Whylie

“Yes. Indeed accountability is very important. What we have done we have catalogue the vests. We’ve taken the sizes as well as the serial number, as well as the brand of those vests and each officer who has been assigned one will be signing for one. The vest will become a personal item of kit. So each vest that has been issued today becomes the property of that officer as long as he remains a member of the Belize Police department. Since it’s a part of his kit, when he falls in he is expected to have his vest with him and come prepared to work.”

The Commissioner of Police stated that the ballistic vests can withstand any fire power except bullets shot out of a rifle.
