Boots Martinez: Barrow to Take U.D.P. into 4th Term in Government

Dean Barrow

Minister Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez confirmed today that he was among a group of U.D.P. politicians who held a meeting with PM Dean Barrow prior to last Tuesday’s cabinet meeting. The group, he says, requested that the PM postpone his retirement and remain in office until 2020 when general elections are due. Martinez stayed on course saying that PM Barrow ultimately took the decision and that the goal is for the current leadership to take the U.D.P. into a fourth term in government.

“That is the mandate of Mister Barrow given both by the constitution of the country and the constitution of the party. And I believe that colleagues feel at this time, they ask Mister Barrow to stay on in terms of leading them to the fourth term. And so we believe that it is good for stability and the constitution both at the party level and especially at the country level allows him that opportunity to stay on until the next election. It was a collective decision by majority of cabinet members; that wasn’t Mister Barrow’s decision at all. Mister Barrow was asked to stay on because in the initial stages, it was Mister Barrow’s decision due to his health condition. So people ask that “it looks like you okay now boss, could you stay with us and sail the ship to the harbour safely in 2020?”

“Where does that put your cabinet colleagues, Patrick Faber and John Saldivar, who were the frontrunners for the leadership?”

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez

“Well they will still…”

“Is it that you guys did not feel like they were ready to take the lead?”

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez

“I don’t know. We asked the prime minister, in our view, to stay on and rightfully so for the sake of the party. We believe that at this point in time that the U.D.P. needs stability and we thought that the best stability for the party is with the party leader and the prime minister.”
