Accused of Running Over 5 Persons; Darrell Usher Gets Supreme Court Bail

Darrell Usher

The Supreme Court also dealt with other bail applications. One in particular that stood out was that of Darrell Usher. The thirty-two-year-old was charged and arraigned on Thursday after he ran over five persons with a vehicle on Cemetery Street in Belmopan, two days earlier.  A total of twenty-two charges were slapped on him for attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, aggravated assault, grievous harm and wounding.  Attorney Hurl Hamilton was able to secure bail with conditions today and Usher was released.

“They are all allegations and yes I am representing him in the matter. He was arraigned yesterday at the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court and we were able to secure bail in the Supreme Court in Belize City. He has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, five counts of aggravated assault, five counts of use of deadly means of harm, three counts of harm, two counts of grievous harm, one count of damage to property and one count of wounding. So it is a slew of charges, about twenty-two charges. Quite frankly I find it ridiculous for so many charges, but when we reach at that stage, we are going to deal with it. Quite rightly, the prosecution has not objected to bail. Clearly they had concerns and the judge imposed certain conditions to mitigate the prosecution’s concerns: to stay away from the virtual complainants, he’s to report to the Belmopan police station and he is not to interfere with prosecution’s witnesses. That I believe is enough to guard against ant risk the court may have foreseen.”

The victims have been identified as thirty-seven-year-old Jessica Sagastume, thirty-seven-year-old Blanco Cho, eighteen-year-old Javier Choc, fourteen-year-old Jorge Pene and eleven-year-old Kadesha Habet.
