P.S.U. Repudiates Mayor Belisle’s Statements on Land Sale

The Public Service Union came out swinging on Monday when it lambasted the Belmopan City Council for secretly selling off a parcel of land within the Ring Road that it has been occupying as its headquarters since 1998.  Sale of the property to Chinese businessman Xin Ni has raised the ire of many, particularly since it was later discovered that he used a false address in Corozal to finalize the purchase under a newly formed shell company.  In the wake of its press conference, the P.S.U. went silent, taking the opportunity instead to reach out to its membership for guidance.  When City Hall convened a briefing of its own the following day, Mayor Khalid Belisle refuted several claims made by the union.  His response has led to a back and forth between both parties, as the labour organization is negating several points that were made by Belisle.  This afternoon, President Doreth Cayetano-Obermayer went on record to disprove those assertions.

“As it relates to after our press conference on Monday, our chairpersons went ahead and met with our members to give them an update in regards to the documents and information that had been gathered thus far.  That meeting was for our members, after hearing the information, to give us a mandate as to how it is that they would want us to move forward in addressing this situation.  So what the press release would address is all the misstatements and all the erroneous statements that were made by the mayor.  In regards to a meeting that was supposed to have been scheduled between him and myself, there was no such arrangement made.  No such call was received by myself or the office for any meeting of such.  No formal letter was sent in requesting a meeting in regards to addressing the current issues of the sale of the land.  What we are doing is trying to get advice as it relates to that, so we have spoken to more than one legal entities as it relates to how best we’re going to address the illegal sale of the land.”
