Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries Speaks Out on Gillnets Task Force

Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries fired off a release today expressing concerns over the functionality of the Gillnet Task Force, which was formed in February to reduce the harmful impacts of gillnets.  The year is coming to an end and according to the Coalition; the task force has only held one meeting since members were appointed.  At that meeting, the Fisheries Administrator moved that the composition of the task force be revised. Since then, there have been no subsequent meetings, despite repeated requests. Director of the Belize Federation of Fishers, Nigel Martinez, spoke to News Five.

“We continue to see the issue occurring and it puts a significant strain on the resource and on the livelihoods of many, many Belizeans primarily the commercial fishers and the sports fishers.”

“You call it gross disrespect. Can you elaborate?”

Nigel Martinez

“It is disrespect because we cannot understand how from one entity which is the Fisheries Department can be stating that they want to see a sustainable fishery, and from the other standpoint they are not doing or advocating enough to ensure that we reach towards a sustainable fishery. That is the reason why the coalition was formed because the federation made it its business to request the list of people who are using the gillnet and to this date we have not received any information pertaining to those people because we felt that a hundred and sixty nine gillnet users are jeopardizing over five thousand jobs in terms of commercial fishers and sports fishers.”
