The Cancer Society and Smart Team Up to Create a Cancer App

The Belize Cancer Society officially launched a cancer app today at its offices in Belize City. Working in conjunction with Smart, the application is available for download, in the first instance, from the Google playstore for all android devices. For Apple products that carry iOS platforms, it is still being worked out. But the app, once downloaded to mobile devices, provides data on the various cancers as well as other non-communicable diseases. It links the user with other health institutions and the services available in their particular area and includes a Body Mass Index calculator. It is a preventative strategy to prevent NCDs as well as social-psychological problems in an interactive way.

“This actually came out of a childhood obesity campaign the Cancer Society was running earlier this year, which was afforded to us by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition through funds from the Caribbean Development Bank. So this was one of the outputs that we got private sector to support. We did not think that it would lead to an app; we basically asked for a text message, and they said well let’s think about something that is a bit more long-lasting and would have an impact on our community. So out of this grant, we created the NCD Copa. The NCD Copa is a coalition of CSOs which includes the Kidney Association, Diabetes, PAHO, City Council HNI, the government of Belize. So it is a coming together of all of society to address childhood obesity and to address NCDs.”

“It was a very tedious process. The cancer society has a very large number of information as cancer is plaguing Belizeans and it is on the increase for various reasons—hereditary traits as well as health practices. Smart has always partnered with the Cancer Society, especially for the annual Cancer Walk and that was when the discussion began in us pitching an idea to Miss Reneau to say can the Cancer Society use an app. W have this idea, we would like to gift it to you guys, but can it be efficiently and effectively used. And of course they jumped onboard. When we saw the amount of information, we had to condense it and see how we can put all of that in a user-friendly app that will benefit Belizeans and that will draw attention for them to want to use the app to seek information.”
