Belize Jaguars Versus Puerto Rico at Isidoro Beaton Stadium

The results of an international match this Friday at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan will determine whether the Jaguars will advance to qualify for Gold Cup in 2019. The Puerto Rican team is already here and the Jaguars will have to beat them to move up. If that happens, the national team will also have to a secure a win against Guyana to place in the top ten. News Five’s Duane Moody reports on what is at stake for the national football team.

On Friday night, the Belize Jaguars “A” Selection takes on the national team from Puerto Rico in yet another round of home and away games in the journey leading up to the Gold Cup 2019.  At eight p.m., the national teams go head to head at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, but who will come out on top? Both teams need to win the two remaining matchups in the Nations League to even get a chance to advance as the top ten teams going into the Gold Cup. At this point Belize is at the eighteenth spot, having beaten Bahamas, but lost to Montserrat.

“We need to win our next two matches, especially by good margins. For those who don’t know, ten of the teams that are participating right now are going to qualify for the Gold Cup. Belize is currently at eighteenth place, but a number of the countries that are in the top ten will be playing each other in the other two matches so if they come up with some draws and we win our next two matches then we could accumulate nine points while some of the top teams right now might only end up with eight points, so that would help us to qualify.”

At the head table for the Puerto Rican team were Technical Director Amado Guevara, Team Manager Jorge Pulido and Team Captain Andres Cabrero. Cabrero is also the second top player/lead scorer for the team. The Puerto Rican team has lost two of its matches to Saint Kitts and Nevis and Martinique and in this third game also need a win against Belize in hopes to advance.

“I come with the mentality that we have to win also. We haven’t won a game yet. We have been playing well but haven’t got the results. So we continue to do the work, we continue to do what we can and we try to do our best to see what we can come out with.”

To get to the Gold Cup, Belize would need to beat Puerto Rico and go on to take out Guyana in March 2019. On the roster are a mix of players including veteran players Ian Gaynair, Woodrow West, Shane Orio and Deon McCaulay and newcomer sixteen-year-old Angelo Catello.

“We train hard, we stay focus. I mean the last game we played against Montserrat was a hard game; it wasn’t an easy game and it was away from home. But we just have to stay focus and believe in ourselves, believe in the work that we put in every day on the field, believe in the coaches for them to guide us and put the right team out there so that we can be successful. I mean the main thing is to play at the highest level that we can play so that we can compete and win this game cause it is a big game for us and we need to win.”

“Our focus is strictly on coming up with a victory on Friday and from us as coaching staff, we have gathered amongst ourselves and focused on what is our aim and objective going into the game. And we relate that throughout training to the players and from last week Monday; we have two training camps and it was a success. And this Monday, the entire team reported to the federation facility and we have been training and we are well-prepared.”
