Saint John’s Credit Union celebrated its seventy-second anniversary today with a mini fair at its branches in Dangriga, Belmopan and Belize City. It has two outlets in Belize City, including its headquarters on Basra Street in south side. It’s an opportunity, says General Manager Daisy Dawson, for its customers and the public to find out more about the services and lines of credit that the financial institution has to offer.

“The credit union is the way to go in terms of providing and getting services in terms of shares and in terms of loans. So we are saying credit union is the way to go; the cheapest rates you will get in terms of your loans. So that is what we are encouraging today; accessing the finance for loans and accessing savings. There are so many new services that we have put on in terms of having online banking; ATM services. In terms of our products we are looking at education loans and when you look at owning your home, mortgage loans, for medical. And we have a special product that is very popular that we call the fast line and it is a line of credit that someone can come in and get assessed and you could get a line of credit anywhere from one thousand up to twenty thousand with no collateral necessary. Bring in your job letter and social security card and you do your analysis and you are able to do that. And the great thing about that feature is that you are able to access that via our ATM as well.”

On the occasion, the credit union took the opportunity to donate one thousand five hundred dollars each to the Diabetes Association and the Kidney Association of Belize to assist in carrying out their healthcare services to the public.

“On a daily basis you hear about our Belizeans who are suffering from kidney problems, having diabetes and all of that. And so we believe that it is only fitting that we reach out and give some sort of contribution in terms of helping those people who are in need because maybe one of us might be in the position as well. So we need to look out for these people.”

Attendees were also able to get regular checkups courtesy of the Kidney Association.

“What’s really happening is that we are noticing a rise of renal failure in our country and this gives us an opportunity to test people as they come to the health fair that the Saint John’s Credit Union that we are doing. So far, we are doing very good and we are looking for protein in the urine. If there is any protein we rule out kidney disease by doing a cretin and bon test. We are also doing an initiative where we are going to different businesses; we started with Puma Belize and B.E.L. We are not doing the police department—one Monday and Tuesday we were out in Caye Caulker and san Pedro testing the officers; tomorrow will be at Queen Street Police Station. We are doing it because when we have health fair, bit many workers are able to come out and do that. In this preventative method, we are going into offices and meet the people where they are at.”
