…But NOT To Participate in Belize’s Electoral Politics

While the bill seeks to allow Belizeans living outside the country to participate in next year’s I.C.J. referendum, it does not permanently eliminate the two-month residency requirement due to several concerns raise:

Kareem Musa, Area Representative, Caribbean Shores

“Two issues that I have with that is that we are trying to seek some middle grounds, we are trying to seek some consensus. It is my belief, after speaking with some of the representatives, that they might not be open to Belizeans living abroad having a say in electoral politics in Belize. Primarily because and their number complaint is how can someone in Los Angeles determine who we choose in Port Loyola. We are living here in Port Loyola so how can someone from Los Angeles vote and determine who can govern us. So I can appreciate that argument. When it comes to registering electronically, again that is something that the Prime Minister and the government of the day will have to address because do not know if the consul are even prepared, whether they have staff, budgetary constraints. We are talking about tens of thousands of Belizeans living abroad that would potentially go in to register. So we have to factor all of that. Are we equipped to deal with such mass registration and mass voting abroad? Also we have to establish and we must be satisfied of the integrity of the process. We won’t have scrutineers from the political parties at the consuls abroad. So that is something that you are talking away. Also people will have to believe that we can trust that electronic registration and that electronic voting.”
