Opposition Leader John Briceño Takes on Prime Minister Dean Barrow

It’s been tit for tat between Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the Leader of the Opposition John Briceño on the latter’s proposal to legalize marijuana, an issue that has been picking up steam in many countries in the region.  Barrow became Briceño’s top critic, calling the idea ‘looney tunes’ and a ‘googly’. On Wednesday Leader of the Opposition hit back, questioning Barrow’s leadership position within the United Democratic Party.

“I listened to part of his press conference and it felt like the twilight zone. First of all, the question: why did he have a press conference? What was his objective? What, did he want to show that he was still in charge? Obviously we know that his party is breaking up apart. Everybody is doing their own thing. Look at what’s happening in Port Loyola where one of them is calling himself the king of Port. Two perceived candidates to be the next leader are ganging up a candidate in Port Loyola. It has become a circus. To add to that, the Prime Minister wasn’t even aware that his own Minister of National Security John Saldivar is now organizing excursions to the Sarstoon River for fifty dollars. It is laughable but it is like a sad joke that now you have to pay the Ministry of National Security to be able to visit the Sarstoon when the Sarstoon, half of it belongs to us, we should be able to have easy and free access to that part of our country. The Prime Minister is skillful with words and he is trying to move away from all of these issues that are boiling up in his party to show that he is still in charge but everybody knows that the Prime Minister is a lame duck prime minister. He has lost control of his government and his press conference only cemented the idea that the prime minister is totally out of it.”
