…MoE May Revisit Curriculum

Margarita Gomez

It is the responsibility of tertiary institutions to have students gravitate to technical and vocational education, which are key to the development of a country. So present at the launch today were representatives from the University of the West Indies, Galen University and the University of Belize as well as officials from the Ministry of Education. The opportunities are available, but these institutions provide the certification for those interested in the respective industries. Director for Employment Training and Education Services, Doctor Margarita Gomez, agree that the ministry may need to revisit curricula and realign them with the demands of the industries.

Dr. Margarita Gomez, Director of ETES

“There are mismatches for several reasons. Probably the curriculum itself is not relevant, but also we know that technology keeps changing and as a result mismatches will always be there, hence the reason for always having the need to conduct gap analysis to be able to determine those. That is very important because on a day to day basis we always have to make sure that what we are putting out in industry is what they need. So it is very important then that these studies be conducted. But from the standpoint of the Ministry of Education, it is a very important tool because it informs us of where the needs are and perhaps what we need to do is revisit the curricula that we offering at the different levels, in these two areas in particular, and realign them to ensure they would include what is expected out in industry. So for us that is very important in terms of a next step after this study is done.”
