The Possibility of Producing Industrial Hemp

The suggestion by Opposition Leader, John Briceño, to legalize marijuana has received major backlash from the government, but gained support in other quarters. Briceño suggests that it is time for Belize to legally harvest marijuana as a new source of income for the Government. There is an overlap between Briceño’s idea and a recent move by government to decriminalize the possession of up to ten grams of weed.  In April 2018, it was announced that the government has made plans to sign onto trade agreements with regional countries and investing in existing and emerging sub-sectors such as industrial hemp. A month after in May, the Belize Agriculture Report focused on industrial hemp production in Belize. Though from the same plant genus, there is a specific difference between industrial hemp and marijuana.  That difference is the level of THC which is significantly lower in industrial hemp than in marijuana. Earlier this year, Minister of Trade, Investment and Commerce, Tracey Taeger-Panton announced that G.O.B. is moving ahead with its plan to produce industrial hemp.  With this in mind, Briceño characterized G.O.B.’s latest stance against marijuana legalization as hypocritical.

“Look at this Belize Agriculture Report where Minister Hulse was involved. It was published on May thirty first 2018. They are talking about industrial hemp production in Belize which is an illegal crop in the United States. They are talking, their government. Minister Aragon during the debate to decriminalize marijuana said that they are already looking legislation to make the growing or the production of industrial hemp in Belize legal. It shows the complete lack of knowledge of their government, the Prime Minister obviously does not know what their ministers are doing or shows a hiyprocrisy to the highest level.”
