Fire Destroys Home in the City

There was a fire in the city on Saturday night. The blaze destroyed a small, wooden home that was occupied by two persons. When fire officials arrived on the scene, the fifteen by twenty structure was engulfed in flames. At this time, the cause of the fire is still not known. News Five’s Andrea Polanco spoke with the house owner today and has more in the following report.

Just before nine on Saturday night, a fire broke out inside a two-bedroom wooden house here on Western Avenue in Belize City. According to the owner of the house, Jamie Bernardez, his two cousins were living inside the structure but no one was at home at the time of the fire.

“I wasn’t here. I was in Mango Creek at the time. They called me and told me that my house was on fire but I nuh know how it was caused, nothing I nuh know. I had my two cousins here but nobody was here at the moment.”

Bernardez says the house didn’t have a source of electricity – and up to this time he has no idea what caused the blaze. The fire completely destroyed the house and all its contents. Fire officials managed to contain the blaze just in time – as the flames had already caught on to this wooden shed; it also scorched the window of this concrete house, as well as several trees in the same yard.

“Bed, sofa, stove, gas tank, couple shelf and just couple things, clothes, you know. If the fire truck didn’t actually move fast, the shed mi gwein too. It just caught a piece of the shed but I done do the clean up.”
