Elderly Man Injured in Butane Explosion in the South

Wilfredo Ferrufino

An elderly man is recovered at the Southern Regional Hospital following an explosion in San Isidro Village in the Stann Creek District.  On Wednesday evening around six-twenty, Bella Vista Police were called out to the village where a vehicle was seen engulfed in flames at Garcia’s Butane Gas Depot. Sixty-five-year-old taxi driver, Jose Morales, was injured to the upper body and face when his passenger van exploded as butane gas was being pumped into the tank at the rear of his 2004 Ford van. One person was in the passenger seat, but luckily escaped unhurt. Today, Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino says that the information gathered so far is that Morales lit a cigarette which caused the explosion.

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, C.I.B., Belize City

“Whilst doing that he lighted a cigarette and that caused the fumes to spark the explosion. The vehicle was extensively damaged by the fire; there were no major injuries. I think the taxi driver, Mister Morales received minor burns and facial hair was burnt. There was another person, passenger in the van at the time but he escaped unhurt. Fire department personnel from Independence assisted in extinguishing the flames.”

“Were any of the employees from the gas station hurt?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“No, no. The only person that received any kind of injury was the taxi driver, the owner of the vehicle.”

“And the other individual was inside the van?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Right; that is what we were made to understand but no injuries.”
