Who’s Liable for Explosion?

Benisford Matura

While Morales is lucky to be alive, the situation could have turned fatal. The incident has brought into focus the need for safety measures to be exercised at butane gas depots. So who is liable in this case? Morales or Garcia’s Butane Gas Depot? That’s what the media asked Deputy Fire Chief Benisford Matura today.

Benisford Matura, Deputy Fire Chief

“Yes we need to practice and exercise more care especially on the side of the companies that have depots need to practice more care and safety because it only takes one false move or one mistake. Well you have come to interview me before for several of these butane explosions where somebody made the wrong move or didn’t adhere to safety precautions and end up with some sort of explosion or fire.”

“If it was indeed as the police have said, a cigarette involved. Apart from being a monumental lapse in safety procedures, shouldn’t some sanction be taken against an operator who is so blaze or so relax that they allow someone to light up on their premises?”

Benisford Matura

“Yes of course if that should be the outcome then some sort of sanction or something should get done. I believe in the outskirts where these many depots are they are more relaxed and don’t adhere to the safety precaution. Just to add to it, while the tank in the van was filling, the attendant was a distance away because if he was right in front of that, he too would have been burnt or probably dead today.”
