Orange Walk Baker Shot Dead; Could it be a Mistaken Identity?

Samuel Castro

There was a murder and shooting in Orange Walk for which there are more questions than answers.  Twenty-five-year-old Samuel Castro was shot early on Sunday morning. He was running an errand on Muffles Street when two men on a motorcycle approached him and fired several shots at him.  Castro was hit five times, once to the lower back and three times to the left arm. He died while receiving treatment at the Northern Regional Hospital. His family is clueless as to who would want him dead because he was a hard working, humble man. Hipolito Novelo reports.

At around twelve-thirty a.m. on Sunday, twenty-five-year-old Samuel Castro was on Muffles Street, Orange Walk Town. He had briefly parked the motorcycle he was on in front of a fenced residence when gunshots were heard, waking up neighbors who found Castro on the ground gasping for air.

Initial police investigation reveals that the decease Samuel Castro was outside of a residence on Muffles Street when it is reported that two male persons on a motorcycle stopped near him and fired several shots at him which caused his injuries.”

Castro was shot a total four times, once to the lower back and three times to the left arm. The gunmen fled the scene, leaving Castro on the side of the street. Residents of the area called police who then rushed Castro to the Northern Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

“I could not believe. I could not believe it. It was so shocking to me to wake up with this news. Friday night he stayed with me and he hugged me and told me that he loved me and that I am everything to him. The next day he came, he brought me and he told me he wants to eat tacos. So we went to eat tacos at in front of Courts and there we were but I was feeling like, I don’t know…”

Hipolito Novelo

“You felt like something was wrong? Or something was about to happen?”

Yvette Cal

“Ah-ha. He was happy and he asked me why I was sad. Why are you like that? I told him its nothing; I am just tired from work.”

His girlfriend of three years, Yvette Cal, told News Five that she was asleep when she heard her phone ring. The couple was to meet up for lunch on Saturday but Castro was unable to attend because he was busy. Cal thought it was Castro calling her; however it was her friend on the other side of the line who delivered the heartbreaking news.

But when I answered it was one of his friends and she just told me Yvette are you okay and I said. I was wondering why she asked me if I was okay. The first thing that came into my head was Samuel because me and he was always together. I asked her why and she said that she just saw on Facebook Rest in Peace Samuel. I felt like I wanted to die. I did not want to believe, this could not be happening. I still have this, I pray to God that it was a mistake.

Mistaken identity-that’s what Castro’s family believes led to his death. He is not known to be a trouble maker, gang member or known to police.

Hipolito Novelo

“He is not part of any gang?”

Yvette Cal

“No. he is a very nice person. He wasn’t like that.”

Hipolito Novelo

“He kept to himself?”

Yvette Cal

“He kept to himself.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Do you think it is mistaken identity?”

Yvette Cal

“I think that because I understand that he was shot in the back.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Do you believe that he was being followed?”

Yvette Cal

“Maybe that could have happened.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Because he was there to get tortillas.”

Yvette Cal

“That is what I understand?”

Hipolito Novelo

“Did he tell you or speak to you about any issues he had with someone prior to his death that might make you feel as thought something was going to happen or something was wrong?”

Yvette Cal

“Not at all.”

Samuel Castro

Investigators have yet to establish an official motive but are following all leads.

ACP Joseph Myvett

“All information that that comes in to us in relation to this investigation we are looking at as well as following on those information. “

Reporter

“Was Mr. Castro somebody known to the police or known to be gang affiliated?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“At this point in time, I would not be able to say that.”

Reporter

“Could you say what he was doing at that particular house?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“We do know as at the time of the incident he was on the street. It is said that he went there to do an errand but we have not been able to confirm that.”

And to the killers, the Castro family has one question:

Yvette Cal

“I just want to know why. Why he did that? His parents, his mom they are heartbroken and they don’t know why this happened to him. If we had the person in front of us we want to know why he did it?”
