A Caye Caulker Chef is Butchered Inside Central Park Hotel in San Pedro

Christopher Meighan

Before noon on Friday, the body of Caye Caulker chef, Christopher Meighan was found in a room at the Central Park Hotel in San Pedro. Meighan had been viciously stabbed all over his body. He was seen entering the hotel room accompanied by two men; police have now apprehended both. On Saturday, U.S. national Lalman Logan was detained at the Philip Goldson Airport when he was attempting to check in to board a flight.  Investigators had alerted the airlines about Logan’s U.S. status, so personnel notified police that he was at the P.G.I.A. and he was arrested.  Logan was arraigned in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court today for murder.  The other suspect, Rufino Herandez, was picked up in Ladyville this afternoon and is to be arraigned as well.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Twenty-one-year-old Christopher Meighan met a grisly end inside this room sometime after checking in at Central Park Hotel on Thursday night.  The Caye Caulker resident, a chef by profession, was stabbed multiple times, his throat slashed and his body left to exsanguinate on the bed.  Upon booking room fourteen, Meighan was in the company of two other men.  It is unclear what transpired among them.  What we can confirm is that a murder took place within the confines of these walls and two men are the prime suspects.  Meighan’s body was discovered by a hotel supervisor when he failed to check out of the room.

“My usual rule is eleven o’clock [in the morning] is check out time.  So I went there that morning at eleven o’clock by the room to see why he didn’t check out.  Going to the room, the door was locked, so I opened the door, I pushed the door saw too much blood.”

Meighan had been butchered by one, if not both, of his roommates.  The blood-soaked mattresses have been placed against the bathroom wall inside the single occupancy and the room has since been sanitized.  Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino shares details that have been uncovered by the police department.

“Police investigation has revealed thus far that Mr. Meighan had entered the room along with one Lalman Logan and Rufino Hernandez sometime around 9:30 on the twenty-seventh.  He was discovered on the twenty-eighth.  He was discovered with multiple stab wounds to his body and that investigation has resulted in the detention of Lalman Logan on the thirtieth of September.  He was formally arrested and charged for the murder of Mr. Meighan.  We are actively seeking Mr. Rufino Hernandez as another person of interest in regards to this matter.”

According to Mustak Miah, who works as a supervisor at the hotel, upon being alerted of the crime, investigators immediately requested surveillance footage from the premises.

“A police came in and he saw my camera.  And I brought his [Christopher Meighan’s] social security card and he cased everything.  Then he carried the dead body.  That was it, I didn’t see which part he was stabbed.  I just saw the cut on his throat, halfway cut off and there was too much blood.”

Police say twenty-nine-year-old Rufino Hernandez is a resident of the San Mateo area of San Pedro Town.  When asked whether any of the three men who occupied the room that night were known to law enforcement, a definitive response could not be provided.

“Have any of these three individuals, including the murder victim here, ran afoul of the law before?  Are these persons that are known to law enforcement?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“I don’t have that information in regards to the background of these individuals.”

Lalman Logan was arraigned in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court and has since been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December eighth.  A manhunt for Rufino Hernandez is still in effect. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
