Decision Was Unilaterally Made by Chair and Treasurer

Vanna Noralez

The decision was unilaterally taken by the Board of Saint Peter Claver College Extension. But that board consists of only the Chair, Lisel Alamilla and the treasurer, Mark Miller.  The teachers are questioning if the decision is valid since the board is operating without representatives from the teacher, the student body, the Ministry of Education and the church. Alamilla unapologetically confirmed that she took the decision because for three consecutive days, adjunct teachers did not show up for classes due to the disagreement of when salaries would be paid.

Vanna Noralez, Teacher’s Rep., St. Peter Claver College Extension

“Our board is currently only two people; our chairperson and our treasurer. Now that is also something that we have been pushing to get alleviated because we need to have a board that is made up of more than two people to make the decisions that will benefit our teachers, our staff and our institution on a whole.”

“If they are saying that this board is not legally constituted, then why would they be asking this board to pay them?”

Duane Moody

“But is it true that these members are not there? And if that is the case, would it be a true statement to say that the decision was made only by yourself and the treasurer that’s right now in place?”

Lisel Alamilla

“….yes because those are the members that are active. We have other members who are not responding to the communications. And so what do you do? Do you just sit there and do nothing? Do you not open school back? What do you do? And the ministry is informed of what happening and in fact the ministry totally understands in discussions that we have said look… The way they are setting up the board doesn’t really work. The way boards are constituted in other secondary school doesn’t work; these are adults. So we were the ones who said we need students to sit on the board because they are adults. The education rules doesn’t make allowance for adults or students to sit on the board.”
