No Arrest for Kortobacco Heist

Police have yet to levy charges for the major heist which took place at Kortobacco Belize Limited located inside the Benque Viejo Free Zone. The heist took place in the wee hours of September ninth.  The burglars stole only cash amounting to more than eight hundred thousand Belize dollars. Footage captured by security cameras shows four masked men using a blow torch to break into the building while a fifth person waited in the getaway car. While investigators believe that it was an inside job, police have yet to lay a charge on anyone regarding the heist. Police are also investigating whether the robbery relates to money laundering.

“Is one of the persons of interest someone who was recently detained and was investigated by the FIU for the possession large amount of US dollars?”

“I will not be able to comment on that especially if that person was not charge.”

“We received reports that two employees seem to have resigned right around the time of this break in, this heist, are you able to say if those persons’ behavior at the time of their departure is considered suspicious and are they considered persons of interest?”

“No we did not get that information but certainly we will be following that.”

“Is there any chance that the main culprits or the people that perpetrated the burglary that the may have absconded to or returned to their place of residence in Belmopan?”

“We do not know.”

 

Also in the west, four men were nabbed on Monday afternoon at the security booth of the Benque Viejo Del Carmen Free Zone. Alert police detected the men wearing uniforms of the Task Force Security Firm, but the group was unable to produce a license. One of them, Jorge Cocom was found in possession of a twelve gauge pump action shotgun with cartridges; he was charged with Kept firearm without a gun license and ammunition. The others: Leo Simpson, George Avila Junior and Calvin Bladen were charged with acting as a security guard without a license.
