BTV is Turned Back from the Sarstoon by the GAF

Smack in the middle of the national celebrations there has been encounter in the Sarstoon. The Belize Territorial Volunteers, lead by Wil Maheia, was up the Sarstoon River prior to this weekend’s eco-challenge. As the group was on the river, a vessel with at least five members of the Guatemalan Armed Forces drove up and told them that that they had to leave and that they were not wearing vests.  Maheia told the GAF that the group is in Belizean waters, but was told that there are international protocols to follow. The GAF is heard telling Maheia that they must clear immigration.

“The passengers are not wearing life vests and for your safety, I will ask you to leave.”

Wil Maheia

“Okay. But do you know that this area belongs to Belize?”

GAF Personnel [Translated]

“This area is not for Belize. There are some international protocols that need to be respected. In those protocols it was established that this area is not for civilians.”

Wil Maheia

“Who says so?”

GAF Personnel [Translated]

“And so if you want to be here, you need to go to immigration.”

Wil Maheia

“But this is Belize, man.”

GAF Personnel [Translated]

“Actually…”

Wil Maheia

“We need to go to immigration? Where?”

GAF Personnel [Translated]

“You need to fill some forms, but also for security reasons civilians cannot swim here. I notice that your passengers are not wearing life vests and so I will ask you to leave. Let’s avoid any kind of inconveniences. I will ask you to please leave. I will ask you to leave…..please.”
