Re-registration – A Numbers Game

Doug Singh

Has the re-registration exercise, which is set to conclude at the end of the month, met its target?  According to Chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission, Doug Singh, a comparison of the total number of voters who participated in the 2015 general elections against the number of persons who have re-registered thus far, shows that roughly eighty-five percent of those voters have since re-registered.

“You can always manipulate numbers to get to almost any conclusion you want statistically, if one wants to paint a good picture or a bad picture relative to the performance thus far of the re-registration process.  Ms. Tamai took the time to point out that the total number of people who voted in the last general elections was about one hundred and forty-six thousand or so, I think a hundred and forty-six thousand.  Registered to date is a hundred and twenty-one thousand, five hundred.  If you were to compare those, it comes up to around eighty-five percent of the people who have registered today.  One could easily conclude that if the people who chose to vote last time chose to register, then majority of them have registered.”
