An Update on the External Audit at NICH

Minister of Culture, Patrick Faber, who is the chair of the board for the National Institute of Culture and History, says that he is awaiting an initial draft of the findings of an external audit of the statutory body. The audit was sanctioned by Cabinet about three weeks ago; after a report from the Finance Officer suggested that there was hanky-panky at the hands of President Sapna Budhrani, who was subsequently placed on administrative leave. Faber has put his own reputation on the line for Budhrani saying that she is as clean as a whistle. But even as the audit results are expected, simultaneous audits are being carried out at the National Sports Council and on the Office of the Music Ambassador, Shyne Barrow who has been asked to account for monies to his office from Budhrani. Faber gave the media an update.

“We are looking into things; it is a normal course of doing things and where there are irregularities that cannot be explained, then we will move to correct those. But the issue has been that internal audits, even audits sanctioned by the ministry itself are blown out of proportion before explanations for very basic things can be given. That has to be out of place. The NICH audit as far as I know is going to be completed today and we are expecting an initial draft from the auditors today; well not me, but the Board but of course I will get to hear about the results there. So I believe if we are not at the complete end, we are almost there.”
