Shane Vellos Wants Justice after Police Officer Broke His Arm

Two months ago, Placencia resident Shane Vellos stopped by our office to share his experience of police brutality. Vellos was locked up after he was accused of theft, but later released and never charged. However, Vellos claims that he was badly beaten by an officer who also broke his left arm. Today, his father, Rudolph Vellos, reached out to News Five saying that he has a secret recording in which the officer attempts to bribe the family, asking them to discontinue the case. Vellos says that the officer has also threatened the family, demanding that they drop the case.

On the Phone: Rudolph Vellos, Father of Shane Vellos

“We contacted the officer.  He took a statement from me and my son and he asked us if we wanted to press charges. We told him yes. It has been two months and nothing. My son’s hand is in cast. He cannot work for two months now. He got his hand broke by the police for no reason. The police officer who broke his hand is still working. And then he came and threatened by son. He told him that if we press any charges and if we saw what happened to a young man in San Pedro who tried to go against the police force. He told us that we can go to the headquarters in Belmopan because he is not afraid. We did go to Belmopan headquarters, internal affairs, and they told us that they will have a tribunal and nothing has happened so far. We have record that the other the police came to my house and took us into the vehicle and offered us a bribe to drop the case. We have it on record too. I also have on record that the police beat my son. We no have police record. My son has never been to court.”

“I believe you because they locked up my son, beat him for no reason. I do not only blame that police because they could have killed my son. I blame the whole shift that was working that night.”
