Anthony McDonald is Gunned Down in Belize City

Anthony McDonald

The carnival road march went off without bloodshed, but around nine on Saturday night, a Crooked Tree resident was shot and killed on Baldwin Drive. Twenty-four-year-old Anthony McDonald was wounded multiple times on his head and shoulders and died on the spot. McDonald had relocated to Crooked Tree to escape the dangerous streets of the city, but on Saturday night, a gunman approached him and cut his life short.  Police say the motive has not been determined. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Even as the police department was on high alert over the extended weekend, there was a murder on Saturday night in the Old Capital. Crooked Tree resident, Anthony McDonald was shot multiple times to the body as he walked on Baldwin Drive, just off Neal Pen Road Extension. According to witnesses, a gunman dressed in all black with a black hat, approached the twenty-four-year-old and opened fire; callously ending his life.

“Upon arrival they met the lifeless body of Anthony McDonald lying on the street side with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and the shoulder. What police has learned so far is that McDonald was walking on Neal Pen Road, and just about reaching the intersection with Baldwin Drive, he was approached by someone who fired several shots at his direction causing the fatal injuries to him.”

“Has authorities been able to establish what was the motive behind the attack?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“There is no motive up to now; no person has been detained.”

We first met McDonald back in June of 2016, years after he had relocated from the city to Crooked Tree to escape from the violence in urban Belize City. A fisherman in the village, McDonald joined several others to lodge his discontent about a fishing policy within the protected area that was threatening their livelihood. In this clip, he bears his soul and the reality of harsh economic times in the country.

While police have not been able to establish a motive for his killing, Assistant Superintendent Alejandro Cowo says that McDonald has ties to a gang in south side Belize City.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We know that he belonged to a certain gang in the city. Up to now we are trying to establish a motive why he was at that location; it is something that we do not know as yet.”
