A Mortar is Retrieved from a Dredge Near Caye Caulker

An explosive round was retrieved from a dredge last Friday, but the police department did not comment on the discovery until today.  The mortar was found on a vessel north of Caye Caulker by a watchman who observed suspicious activity in the area on Thursday night.  When it was later determined that the device had been placed on the dredge, police and B.D.F. explosive exports were called in.  Today, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett discussed the incident.

“On Friday, August thirty-first, sometime around 9:30 a.m., police were called to a dredge north of Caye Caulker Village whereupon arrival they were pointed to an area on the dredge which resulted in them discovering a sixty millimeter mortar, live ammunition.  As a result, the B.D.F. experts were called who came in an inspected the ammunition before it was brought in by the B.D.F. pending investigation.  Initial investigation into that matter is that on Thursday, August thirtieth, shortly after 5:30 p.m., the workers on the dredge had left for the day and sometime later that evening the watchman arrived and upon his arrival a small, white boat was seen leaving the area.  So then the discovery was not made until the following day which was Friday, August thirty-first.  Police investigation into this matter, along with the B.D.F. continues.”
