PUP Leader Wants ComPol Whylie Fired

The People’s United Party says it is ready to work with the government to effectively and efficiently address the gun violence in the Old Capital, but G.O.B. has repeatedly refused to consult with the P.U.P.  John Briceño says a bi-partisan commission, including civil society, should be formed to come up with a strategic plan of action. Briceño also reiterated the party’s call for ComPol Allen Whylie to be fired immediately.

“Let me express my dissatisfaction with the fact that this proclamation was issued without any consultations with the mayor of Belize City who only found out about it when it was announced with the press. It is disrespectful to the mayor to take such actions which will affect thousands of Belizeans in Southside Belize City without consulting with their duly elected Mayor. The fact that the Government has taken the drastic step to declare a state of public emergency in the Southside of Belize City is a clear admission of their inability to handle the crime situation. Indeed the Acting Commissioner stated in this morning’s press conference that the situation is getting out of control. No Sir, the situation is out of control. There have been one hundred and fifteen murders, fifteen in the month of August alone. This past weekend was the most deadly and violent in recent months and the police have reported that innocent persons may have been shot and killed in Southside Belize City just being in the area while on the job. We repeat our call for the removal of the Commissioner of Police. We reiterate our call for a by-partisan commission to include the civil society to look at a comprehensive, long term and effective plan to deal with gun violence, home invasions and murders.”

“I already heard some complaints, but when the gang members, the children were on the street killing, robbing, burglarizing and tormenting people, they were not complaining. So now that we have decided to move this way to deal with them, please don’t complain and allow us to do what we need to do to get the matter under control. What we are doing may be what will save the lives of their children because if they continue down this path, eventually it will take them to one place and you all know where that is.”
