Placencia Villagers Unite to Fight Off Sargassum Attack

Placencia Villagers are coming together to fight off the Sargasso attack. Like on the beaches of San Pedro, Placencia has been invaded by Sargassum. Besides the foul odor and unpleasant sight, the Sargasso produces a toxic gas which can cause health complications. It’s a problem that is putting the livelihood and health of the villagers at risk. On Sunday, Placencia villagers came together to address the issue. Treasurer of the Placencia Village Council, Jodie Yearwood Leslie spoke to News Five.

“We have decided that there are many different things hopefully that can be done. We are being proactive. We are trying to start our initiative by digging trenching along the beach. We have actual man power from all over the community coming in, the resorts, and the private sectors. They are basically pulling in the sea grass with pitch forks and buckets and shovels. They are putting it on the trench. We are then covering it back over with the sand to try to use as a landfill. We are to help the erosion by doing so. The brown Sargassum that you are seeing there as we are raking it in, there is a lot of controversies saying that you are going to disturb this; you are going to disturb that. The right of the matter is that there is nothing to be disturbed. Once the Sargassum turns that brown and is that close into shore everything in it is dead. That Sargassum can be walked on top off. It is so dense. It goes possibly four, five feet. Yesterday we had adults as well as children literally from different sizes walking on top of the sea grass. That is how dense it is. So we have to get in. We have to scoop it up in order to kind of break it up so that water can start to flow underneath again. The living Sargassum can actually come in or actually continue to live. The dead Sargassum serves no other than really just becoming a horrific problem for the village. The stench is horrible.”

Sargassum has been affecting many Caribbean and Latin American countries.

Why not bring BP (British Petroleum) in the spotlight as they are the ones that cause all of this by the oil spill.
