Annual Flag Raising Ceremony to Kick Off September Celebrations

The annual flag raising ceremony was held at the roundabout near Pallotti High School on Saturday morning to officially kick off the September Celebrations.  The brief ritual at the Flag Monument was attended by Mayor Bernard Wagner and his team from the Belize City Council.  Here is an excerpt from his address.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor

Bernard Wagner

“We are gathered here today to re-dedicate our hearts, minds and souls to Belize.  We do so by honoring our ancestors, the men and women who sacrifice of blood sweat and tears gave this land to us that we proudly salute this land called Belize.  We raise and fly our flags proudly because we always want the entire universe to know that this is the Jewel, this is Belize.  From today onwards, for the next three weeks, we will celebrate Belize, from the alpha that was the Battle of St. George’s Caye in 1798, to the omega that was the declaration of our independence on September 21st, 1981.  We will dedicate ourselves to honoring those historic events, but we must look soberly, analytically at the challenges we face today as a nation and we must arm ourselves with the courage of forefathers and mothers to face the future.  In a few short months we must decide, we must make a decision that will have some significant consequential effect on the future of this nation.  In April next year, we as a nation, every eligible citizen who is a registered voter will have the opportunity, the duty of citizenship to vote whether or not the International Court of Justice should hear any or all of Guatemala’s unfounded claims.”
