Leelah Vernon Music School to Open at Stella Maris

The Stella Martin School located on Princess Margaret Drive is preparing to add music to its programme for children with learning disabilities.  It’s a welcomed addition for which the school principal turned to the Music Ambassador, Shyne Barrow.   Earlier today a donation of music sheets and instruments were received by Principal Karema Oshon for the music school which is aptly being named after the iconic Leila Vernon, the Queen of Brukdong. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The establishment of a music school at Stella Maris has been long in the making and Music Ambassador Shyne Barrow has been doing everything possible to fulfill a promise made to the administration over a year ago.  That idea came to fruition in part today when a set of instruments were donated to the school.

“The principal and Ms. Ferguson stayed behind me every step of the way because obviously I have many responsibilities, many financial obligations and so it’s not easy to find this money, but I made sure to keep my promise for the new school year which was the promise, that we would start it for the new school year.  So I’ve handed over all of the material and now I just need to go find the rest of the money to take care of the teacher and the school will commence officially on October twenty-first as the Leelah Vernon Stella Maris Music School.”

On behalf of the institution whose student body is a diversity of children with various learning challenges, Principal Karima Oshon is appealing for assistance to develop the present offerings.

“This program will surely uplift our existing programs here at Stella Maris School.  We want to expose our children to the music, the art of music because we know where it can lead and we never know what hidden potentials our students possess, so we want to tap into them.  You can contact us at the school, Stella Maris School, at 224-4564 or you can contact me on my cell, 600-7279.  If you want to stop in, stop in at Stella Maris School and we can dialogue to see how we can really upgrade this program as well.”

The music school is named in honor of Queen of Bruk Dong Leelah Vernon who dedicated her life to promoting the Creole culture as well as its rich, traditional music form.  Shyne spoke of the donation of instruments.

“All of the materials that were needed to teach the class: instruments, books, et cetera, have all been delivered, the recorders.  I listed them earlier, everything that I gave, all of the books, all of the stands, everything that the principal requested as far as materials are concerned I was able to hand over today and now we just need to work on the teacher.  Obviously that comes at a cost, so we are working on that right now.  But we invite any generous donor out there who loves music and loves children to join up and contact the principal directly and they can make their contribution to her.”
