Delivery Man Shot and Killed on George Street

Daniel Lopez

Victim number three, also on Friday night, was Daniel Lopez, a delivery man for Chon Saan Palace. The twenty-five-year-old was sent to deliver food at the corner of Basra and George Street in gang territory where street figures were mourning the murder of an associate, hours earlier.  A gunman fired several shots in his direction, hitting him multiple times to the body. Police have not established a motive for this murder, but have arrested and charged George Street resident Shane McFoy for the crime. News Five was first on the scene and Hipolito Novelo reports.

Hipolito Novelo reporting

Twenty-five-year-old delivery man Daniel Lopez was gunned down at the corner of Basra and George Streets in Belize City. At around eleven thirty on Friday night police responded to shots fired in that hot spot. There they found Lopez lying face down, motionless on the pavement, with his helmet still on and the indicator lights of the motorcycle still blinking. Lopez was on a delivery run for Cho Saan Palace where he worked for many years. In fact, he had already made his delivery and was driving off when a gunman pounced on him from the rear, blasting several shots in his direction. Lopez died on the spot. Owner, Lee Mark Chang calls Lopez’s murder random and senseless.

“It could have been anyone of the deliveries. We were closing out and that was one of our last deliveries. We go by turns here so it is very random in terms of people choosing their delivery. People might know them but it was very random in terms of the delivery.”

Reporter

“So it could have been anyone you think?”

Lee Mark Chang

“It could have been anyone, anyone of my drivers that were closing up.”

Reporter

“Nothing was stolen from him?”

Lee Mark Chang

“As far as I am concerned, nothing was stolen. All the delivery money was there. His cell phone was there. The bike was there. Everything was there. Nothing was stolen from him as far as I am concerned. Dan was working a couple years and he is a very outstanding worker. He comes to work on time, makes him money, goes home and does not give any trouble. I do not see why they will shoot an innocent bystander.”

The motive is believed to be a crime of opportunity. Investigators suspect that thirty-two year old Shane McFoy is the gunman. He has been charged and arrested for the crime of murder. McFoy is a resident of a resident of George Street and known to police.

“It’s base on investigation, surveillance and cooperation from the public.”

Reporter

“The person accused of the murder, the thirty two year old, is he a known gang figure in that area?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, he is a well known person from that location.”

Reporter

“Because it is such an unusual crime, is it like a retaliation against the state? Is it a murder to say that I killed a man just to see him die? Is it a murder for the sake of killing someone?”

Daniel Lopez

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“It is just a murder of opportunity. Nothing was stolen from the guy.”

While a quick arrest is commendable, Chang says more has to be done in order to successfully prosecute, a judicial process which can take many years.

Lee Mark Chang

We need better forensics. We need better prosecution. That’s the main thing that we are slipping down in Belize, forensics and prosecution. And of course the witness because the witness does not get protect and they are scared for their lives too.”

Meanwhile, Chon Saan Palace has implemented its own policy aimed at protecting its employees, especially its delivery men.

Lee Mark Chang

“The only policy that we have was like for example all the extensions because our guys use to go in there and get robbed and jacked so we do not deliver to any of the extensions. So now we have a new policy that anything between Euphrates and the canal side you would have to come out to the main street for your orders now. So the delivery guy will call you or person that will be taking your orders will call you and say you know what if you want your food you have to come out to the main area. Their safety is our first priority for us moving forward.”

Lopez leaves behind three daughters. Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.
