That Notebook with Flight Plans for Illegal Plane Landing in the North

Chester Williams

Today, News Five caught up with Acting Commissioner of Police Chester Williams at an event in the city. As head of operations for the Belize Police Department, Williams was asked about the perceived incompetence of the department to secure evidence or their inaction in high profile drug plane landings. This is in reference to a notebook carrying flight plans for the illegal landing of suspected drug planes in the north. In a release from the Ministry of National Security earlier this week, the department confirmed that the notebook was retrieved from the scene of a crash landing in Corozal District. So how did the sensitive evidence end up in the hands of a Facebook user, who posted images of the book and its contents?

Chester Williams, Acting ComPol

“I am sure Mister Moody that if the police were to go to your house and were to confiscate maybe a notebook—the notebook belonged to you—chances are that you would have copies of the content of the notebook. So at this time to just out rightly say it was from the police care or custody that the content of the notebook is out in the public domain is really and truly premature.”

Duane Moody

“So then sir, what is going to be done about that particular individual or Facebook user who posted this thing? Does it mean that this person is part of this illegal/illicit drug activity that’s happening in the country and we haven’t been able to track down this person?”

Chester Williams

“We are trying to establish who this person is. But I am sure that you would appreciate the fact that when it comes to the issue of social media, there are several persons out there who hide themselves behind fake profiles. And it is really and truly a challenge for us at times to be able to truly identify who are behind those fake profiles. But like you said, it is something that we are looking at and we surely would be very interested in knowing who the person is and see what he or she may have that could aid our investigations as we continue to probe not the illegal landings of planes in the northern part of our country.”
