Boots, Castro Confirm Others Want to Stand for U.D.P. Leader

Within the United Democratic Party, there is news that Corozal North’s Hugo Patt is offering himself for leadership of the party, but Patt says he has made no decision.  While, it may be about a year or more before candidates formalize their interests, we know that there is jostling for power with Patrick Faber and John Saldivar as front runners.  Today, we caught up with two senior ministers.  We asked them who they’ll support for the leadership. Both Edmond Castro and Anthony Martinez say they are yet to decide though others may want to enter the leadership race.

Edmond Castro, U.D.P. Minister

“We have two declared persons who would like to run for leadership of the party. It seems and it sounds like other people might be throwing their hat in the race, so I will hold my reservation to see who is coming.”

Andrea Polanco

“Between Mr. Saldivar and Mr. Faber, any one of them approached you for your support, knowing that you are a senior member of the UDP?”

Edmond Castro

Edmond Castro

“[Laughs] They are both of my colleagues and I will have to at some point decide which one to go with if they are the only two candidates. I have been talking to both of them and trying to give them good advice.”

Andrea Polanco

“There are reports of a third person – anyone else outside of Mr. Saldivar and Mr. Faber approached you say that we may want your support?”

Edmond Castro

“Not yet. Not yet. But I am definitely sure that it sounds like other people want to throw their hats in the race.”

Andrea Polanco

“More than three?”

Edmond Castro

“It sounds like other people want to put their hat in the race, so we would have to wait to and see. I am here for the greater good of the party and I will support who I believe will give us the best chance to return back to Belmopan in 2020.”

Anthony Martinez

Anthony Martinez, U.D.P. Minister

“The race is early and I think that as my colleague rightfully pointed out, at this point in time, the main focus of all my colleagues, the leadership is secondary and primary is getting the goods and services to the people of the constituency and by extension the people of the country.”

Andrea Polanco

“Anyone approached you as yet, Minister, to ask for your support knowing that you are a senior member of the party?”

Anthony Martinez

“Yes, but like what I am saying, the primary focus, I think that the two candidates who are running have approached me but in terms of moving forward, the primary focus even as the representative for Port Loyola, is to make sure we do what is our primary focus is to deliver the goods and services to the people of Port Loyola and so the leadership becomes secondary.”
