Boots Vows Third Time Will Not Be Charm for Gilroy Usher in Port

Gilroy Usher Sr.

Long-time U.D.P. area rep for Port Loyola Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez thinks the P.U.P. made a mistake in endorsing Gilroy Usher for the Port. Martinez is retiring from electoral politics, but says he will remain active within the U.D.P. and will have a big say in his replacement. Usher came within seventy-three votes of beating Martinez in the 2015 general elections, but he says that Usher stands no chance winning his division.  Recently, the P.U.P. asked Belize City Councilor Candice Pitts to withdraw from the race and endorsed Usher. Here’s what Martinez had to say.

Anthony “Boots” Martinez, Area Rep, Port Loyola

“To me, that is their business but that is a terrible thing to start with. I like the UDP chances in Port Loyola and I wah tell you the reason why; Mr. Usher nuh win nothing. He get beat two times. I tell you that I have my own view and as long as I am alive and as long as I am around politics, I couldn’t see myself, and I couldn’t see the people of Port Loyola supporting Mr. Usher – who has a terrible distaste especially for women and I am saying this to you point blank, as the Minister responsible for women, I could never see myself supporting or having people supporting Mr. Usher. I not even know how the PUP could even endorse Mr. Usher as a candidate with that terrible character especially against women. I am sorry. It is a sad day for democracy but it is what it is.”

“Do you think Pitts would have given a better run there for the P.U.P.?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“Well, in my view, I think that we di look fi sensible representative with good reputation, in my humble opinion.  I will tell you that is one issue, I will tell you I will continue to harp to the forefront to the people of Port Loyola because we can’t have people like Mr. Usher who dah wolf inna sheep clothing. And refuse, inna my view, the party, the People’s United Party – that dah dem business but inna my view I think that is fair win for the U.D.P.  Inna my view, deh neva have no sense at all. You nuh see dah man cyaa win nothing? He get beat two times.”
