Off-Duty Policeman Shot; Shooters Evaded 3 Police Checkpoints

A police officer was shot while off-duty on Saturday night in the Victoria Street neighborhood.  Sergeant Shawn Walton was seated inside his vehicle when multiple shots were fired within proximity of him.  Despite a trio of checkpoints in the vicinity, Walton’s attackers were able to flee the scene successfully by heading in the direction of North Front Street.  According to Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino, investigators are not clear on who the intended target of the shooting was since there were others in the immediate area where the shots were fired.

“On the ninth, at about 10:30 p.m., police visited the KHMH trauma room where they encountered Shawn Walton, a forty-three-year-old sergeant of police with a gunshot wound to the left forearm.  Indications from Mr. Walton is that he was parked in his vehicle on Victoria Street when he heard four, a number of gunshots and he felt a burning sensation on his arm and he realized that he was shot.  He was taken to the hospital.  We are seeking two persons in regards to that incident and the matter is under investigation.”

“Was he the intended target of the shooting or was this a situation where he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and caught a stray?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“We are, the investigation is still ongoing and we can’t confirm at this point if he was indeed the intended target, but we are looking into it.”

“Sir, you all have a multiplicity of checkpoints in that area, it is probably per square foot the most secure, theoretically, the most secure area in the country.  Were you all able to determine where the shots came from and immediately locate and identify the suspects?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“No.  In regards to this incident the suspects, the incident happened approximately a hundred and fifty feet from the checkpoint which is located at the corner of New Road and Victoria Street.  This incident happened more towards the corner of North Front Street and Victoria Street, so the culprits made their escape down Victoria and on to North Front Street.”

“Was Walton, I know you said it, I just want to underscore.  He was in a personal vehicle, off-duty?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Yes, he was in his personal vehicle off-duty.  He was visiting someone in the area and he was seated in his vehicle awaiting that individual and that was when he was injured or shots were fired.”
