13 Shelters Identified by City for Hurricane Season

On Thursday, we shared the City Emergency Management Organisation’s plans and preparation for the hurricane season. Also discussed was the issue of shelters across the City. According to CEMO, the shelters have been assessed and are in proper condition to be used in the event of evacuations. Here’s more from CEMO’s press briefing.

“Overall, we have five north side shelters: Trinity Methodist school, Teachers College UB Campus, All Saints School, UB Engineering Building, Pallotti High School. While on the south side we have Saint Luke Methodist School, Saint Martin De Porres School, Saint John Vianney School, Salvation Army School, Grace Primary, Queen Square Anglican School, Maud Williams High School, and Unity Presbyterian School.”

“For the hurricane shelters, we do two inspections; one right after the season to see what damages are done and one just before the season starts or couple months before. So, we need to see what was damaged and get it repaired and get it ready for the next season. So, yes, we have done that already. These shelters are certified shelters because it is not only CEMO members, we have NEMO, engineers, Public Health Department, Fire Department, all of them  are involved in the inspection team.”

“These buildings that are assigned as shelters can only withstand up to a certain category of hurricane. But in our plan, we ask that evacuation takes place anything above a category two hurricane. So, anything above that we do not encourage people to stay on the islands and in the vulnerable areas. But we all know that we have hard ears people who will stay behind, so those are the ones we really need to focus on and prepare for them.”
