New Council Tackling Manhole Covers

Bernard Wagner

Covers for manholes? Mayor Bernard Wagner says yes. When he took up office in March, he also took up a contract, done under Darrel Bradley’s administration, to get the manholes covered. But even today the uncovered manholes remain a public health issue for pedestrian safety.  But since taking up office Mayor Wagner says they are working with a contractor to cover the manholes and it is an endeavor he hopes to fulfill.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor

“When we came in what we found was that there was a contract to retrofit or to build a certain number of manholes, but for some reason or the other that contract was not completed. I am not certain as to why it was not completed. We were able to touch base with the individual and spoke to the individual, tell him listen, man, we need those other man holes covered and we know that you have completed quite a number of them. So, we were able to reach out to that person and we got those manhole coverings from them because we feel that it is important. Listen man, everyday somebody di drop inna deh manholes. The Council is facing a lot of losses; lots of people are coming to us, the demand payment for injury, medical expenses. We need to address that, so my Works Councilor continues to work with the Works Department to ensure that we get this manhole cover behind us.”

“Are you cautiously optimistic that it will be done to completion, that there won’t be any kind of issues? We know that the past mayor had promised and never delivered on this issue?”

Oscar Arnold

“We are working to complete it; that’s in our agenda. We need to complete it. We can’t have our residents being put at risk, so we are committed to ensuring that we complete all the manhole coverings.”

Oscar Arnold, Deputy Mayor, Belize City

“In that aspect, we want to make a plea to residents as well because a lot of time, some public transportation, and even private residents park on the sidewalk, and the manhole covers were not designed to take that load. And so, even if we finish to completion, if we continue having that practice continued, we will keep repairing manholes for the entire term.”
