For the first time since its inception, Belize has been selected to participate in FIFA’s international children’s social programme, Football for Friendship. The programme aims at developing youth football and a healthy lifestyle among young footballers across the world. In its sixth year, the 2018 programme is being held in Moscow, Russia from June eighth to the fifteenth.

“This programme seeks to empower youths that have identified their talent and skills and I am very much happy to have one of our young football aspirant and a young journalist traveling with us. This programme will open up their minds more to what they can expect in the future. It will make them more objective and it will…there will be an international children’s camp that will work towards what they are going for. For football…as a journalist, as a coach or as a child with special needs. But the special event will be the international football for friendship children’s forum which is geared to discussing the key values of this programme. And the key values are one for friendship, for peace, to instill discipline and as well one that promotes them as an active ambassador that will help them to instill the different values that will be taught at this camp.”

For the young athletes, it is the first time that they are traveling outside the country with their parents, let alone all the way to Russia. Twelve-year-olds Christopher Young and Joseph Waight are both ecstatic about the opportunity—Young will participate as a teen reporter and Waight will partake as Belize’s youth football ambassador.
