Police Digging Deep into Downtown Robberies

Over the past few weeks, we’ve reported on several armed robberies on businesses in the downtown area. In less than a week, two businesses on Albert Street, including Hofius, were robbed. And just this week, Spoonaz Café on North Front Street was robbed as well as another establishment on Albert Street. Today, we caught up with Deputy Commissioner of Police Chester Williams and Area Representative Tracy Panton in the downtown area where they were meeting businesses owners. Williams commented directly on the brazen attacks on the commercial strip. He says the Police Department has an idea of who the criminals are that are targeting the businesses, but they are exploring all angles to find out if this is an organized group operating within the downtown area. As he pointed out, the robbers have been posing as law enforcement and security officers – so they are monitoring it closely and are working at curbing the crime for businesses and shoppers.

Chester Williams, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations)

“We have to look at all possible angles when we investigate these crimes. Yes, the possibility does exist that the crimes are being orchestrated by different groups and we have basic idea of who those persons are and we are looking at them with a view to see if we can gather the evidence, arrest and charge them and take them before a court of law. But, until then, we must put things in place to prevent them from furthering their actions where it relates to coming on Albert Street or even going elsewhere in the city. Every business owner fears becoming the next target or victim of a robbery; our thing is to ensure that does not occur and we are going to do our best. I know for a fact that criminals do look for opportunities. We are not gonna say that we are gonna deter the crime all together. After all, Albert Street is a business area and where there is business it attracts crime and the criminals will look for opportunity. But what we are going to do is to limit the criminals’ opportunity to come on Albert Street and operate in the way they may want. And if they do commit any crime, we want to be able to have things in place while doing the crime or immediately after committing the crime.”

“The robbery – the robbers were dressed in security guard uniforms – any idea how they got their hands on those?”

Chester Williams

“I cannot say how they got those but I can tell you that we are now looking at persons who are in security guard uniforms; we are even looking at persons who are in police uniforms because we know for a fact that there have been fake police before so we cannot ignore those factors. When we are addressing the issues that we are facing today, we must ensure that we explore all possibilities with a view that we can nip the bud the situation at its bud.”
