At O.A.S., Tide of Sympathy for Guatemala

They may be occasionally irascible neighbors, but they are neighbors nonetheless. And in the aftermath of the devastation caused by the volcano “El Fuego” in the municipality of Antigua, Guatemala, on Sunday, the nations of the region and the world have come together in empathy. Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington, during this week’s meeting of the general assembly of the Organization of American States, joined his diplomatic colleagues in expressing their respects to Guatemala. Elrington went on to speak of the countries’ current relationship and the advances made in getting both countries, if Belizeans agree after a majority of Guatemalans have done so, to the International Court of Justice.

“I wish to start my intervention this morning by expressing Belize’s deepest sympathies with the government and people of Guatemala, on the eruption of the volcano, resulting in the deaths of many of their citizens; we are deeply saddened by that event. Belize has lots of connections with Guatemala, kith and kin as well. We are deeply sorry and we have expressed to the Guatemalan Foreign Minister our own willingness to be of whatever assistance we are able to give to that country at this time of need. Belize would also wish to express our deepest gratitude to all the friends of Belize and Guatemala who have been supporting our initiative to have our territorial dispute resolved at the International Court of Justice in a peaceful and mature way. We are deeply indebted to all of you for the stalwart assistance you have afforded us over the years, and we invite you to continue to support us as we move the process forward to the International Court of Justice.”
