Belizeans Spared Wrath of Volcano Disaster

Alexis Rosado

Ambassador Alexis Rosado, Belize’s diplomatic representative in Guatemala, also extended sympathies to families who have suffered losses in the wake of the volcanic disaster in the central highlands of Guatemala.  Fortunately, the few Belizeans living in and around the city of Antigua are all accounted for.

Alexis Rosado, Ambassador to Guatemala

“It’s such a sorry situation, you know, we expressed our solidarity, our condolences to the families who are bereaving now.  It’s really tragic and it shows how nature could be beautiful and deadly at the same time.  I am heartened to have witnessed the reaction of the Belizean people and the international community as a whole who have responded in a very positive way, you know, expressing that solidarity and support.  I know Belizeans have been mobilizing to collect any form of support and assistance they can send to our fellow neighbors.  I hope that the recovery is fast, you can’t replace the people who have been lost but Guatemala does need that solidarity and support from all of us.”

Isani Cayetano

“To the best of your knowledge, do you know if there were any Belizeans who were in the area or who live in that particular area at the time of the eruption?”

Alexis Rosado

“As far as I am aware, the Belizeans in Guatemala, they’re not many but they are all fine.  We are not aware that any have been directly affected by the volcano eruption.  So as far as we are aware everybody has been reported as well and good.”
