P.U.P. Meets with S.S.B. over Contributions Plan

The Social Security Board continues to seek support for an increase in voluntary contributions by employees, which may potentially allow for an increase in benefits as well. Thirty-seven years after it was first established, the board is worried about a serious financial crisis if the primary base of funds is not replenished. Representatives from the board recently sat down with the People’s United Party and leader John Briceño said during Tuesday’s briefing with the press that they listened to the particular concerns and will formulate a position after internal party meetings. He noted that what they heard was “troubling.”

“The Social Security Board – some members and the C.E.O. – came to make a presentation in my office, and there was just a few of us because we did not know all the details they were presenting to us. And yes, they have painted a really troubling view of Social Security in the years to come, and they’re trying to make the case that we will have to consider raising the contributions the workers do to the Fund. But what we agreed to with them, is that I’m going to invite them now to make a presentation to the executive and the parliamentarians jointly,  so that after they finish, we can ask all the questions and after that be at a position to say whether we will support or not support their proposal.”
