The P.U.P.’s Big Tent: Zenaida May Be In, Said Not Out

Zenaida Moya

The party has faced questions about its level of participation in the convention season by women, after defeated candidate in Corozal Bay, Thea Garcia Ramirez, suggested the party would not make its thirty percent threshold for female candidates. There has also been a suggestion that former U.D.P. mayor of Belize City Zenaida Moya might switch parties and run in the Mesopotamia division for the P.U.P.  But one old lion, who it is safe to say is not going anywhere, is eight-term area representative for Fort George, Said Musa.  Briceño said that there has been no discussion within the party of the former leader and prime minister stepping aside at the end of his current term.

John Briceño, Leader, P.U.P.

“He was correct in denying because that has not happened; we did not discuss that; we did not have that discussion in the National Executive and I don’t know who has spoken to Mr. Musa about that; so I don’t know where you got your story. I agree with him to deny it.”

“Can you confirm or deny reports that in particular; former U.D.P. Zenaida Moya has come knocking on the P.U.P.’s door to run in the Mesopotamia division? Can you confirm or deny that or any talking in the P.U.P. regarding that supposed request?”

John Briceño

“As I said, a lot of people want and are expressing interest in running for the P.U.P.; and we listen to everybody; doesn’t mean we will accept or not accept.”

“Including Moya…”

John Briceño

“As I said, a lot of people have been speaking to us.”

Reporter

“Would that be entertained by the P.U.P.? She is a former U.D.P. with not a good past…”

John Briceño

“As I said, any of these decisions, they have to go through the process, there’s the process that you go to the vetting committee and also to the National Executive.”
