What Can Be Done About Fuel Prices?

Earlier in the newscast, you hear the P.U.P. leader speak on a number of pressing national issues as well as party matters. But John Briceño opened his press conference today with an overview of the economic situation. He made note of the continuous price increases in fuel prices, which as has been pointed out, is the driver of the economy. Much of the increase is due to government taking as much as forty percent in fuel taxes. As we have reported, taxes have now reached almost the same level as the actual landed cost of fuel. Briceño made another appeal to remove this chokehold from the economy and free the productive sector to grow.

John Briceño, Leader, P.U.P.

“Since the beginning of the year, premium gasoline has gone up by sixty cents; regular gasoline, up by ninety-five cents; and diesel, by one dollar and thirteen cents. On diesel alone, which is of vital importance to the productive sector, Government is collecting four dollars and thirty-two cents of the ten dollars and sixty-three cents per gallon; that amounts to more than forty percent of the cost of fuel going to government by way of taxes; or forty cents out of every dollar we spend at the pump is going straight to government for taxes. Government can and should immediately reduce the tax on all fuel. How can our productive sector grow, when an important cost of production, fuel, continues to rise? How can our tour guides and taxi operators make headway when they have to pay more and more every day at the pump? It’s a shame that the government puts so much burden on the Belizean people, when every day, there are new allegations of abuse, waste and corruption by this U.D.P. government.”
