Authorities Say Nearly 2 million Affected; Aid Requests Coming

According to reports from Guatemala’s Institute of Forensic Sciences, volcanic ash has already blanketed a twelve-mile radius and winds could carry the dark gray cloud even farther.  Authorities have called on residents living near the volcano to evacuate immediately, particularly those in the states of Chimaltenango and Escuintla to watch out for volcanic rocks and ash.

On the Phone: Erick Galindo, Guatemalan Resident

“It is estimated that around three thousand people were left homeless. It’s a difficult situation. There are many people who have died. Nobody expected the volcano to react in this manner. The element of surprise was enemy number one to those people that died. They are still looking for survivors and they are still finding victims. The volcano was still erupting up to this morning. There were two more eruptions that caused more ashes to be expelled from the volcano. About an hour ago the rescue efforts were suspended due to the rain, which would have complicated things more because of the amount of ashes.”

Late this evening, the Government of Guatemala through its embassy in Belize issued a statement which says that Guatemala has activated the orange institutional alert system and is evaluating the damages caused by the volcano. According to the official report, the tragedy so far stands as follows: one point seven million persons have been affected, three thousand two hundred plus have been evacuated and treated, one thousand nine hundred have been sheltered, more than fifty persons wounded and sixty-five persons have died. The release from the embassy states that authorities in Guatemala will be seeking aid after their evaluation of the damages.
