Labour Reaches Out to Unions, Business

Ivan Williams

Labour Commissioner Ivan Williams tells us that his office believes that the mediation and conciliation training will be useful to ongoing and future labour dialogue. He says he believes that equipping the participants with the skills will help to reduce third party interventions in labour disputes.

Ivan Williams, Labour Commissioner

“In some discussions we have been having with our tri-partite partners which is the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the National Trade Union Congress, under the tri-partite approach, we recognize that they too can benefit from this training. While the training was particularly geared or catered to mediators from the labour department, we decided to extend to as many as we could, some employers and representatives of the trade union congress. It is always good if the other side understands the process and then it is easier for the mediator to move head.  It is always best when the parties can resolve their difference but we stand ready to assist in instances where either at the stage they are negotiating their collective agreement. For instance, right now we have a lot of collective agreements that are being negotiated and we have some parties who have been negotiating for years and cannot get to the level of achieving a CBA. And yes, it will reduce the number of third party intervention, particularly the labour department.”
