City Man Charged with Fire Set at Ex’s House

Shaquille Martinez

He is accused of attempting to set the home of his former partner on fire. Now twenty-two-year-old Shaquille Martinez of Neal Pen Road has been jailed on a charge of arson. Martinez is alleged to have visited his ex’s residence on Monday. She refused to let him in and told police that after her refusal she immediately smelled what appeared to be gasoline, and then saw a curtain on fire, which she quickly put out. Martinez appeared before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford with attorney Ronell Gonzalez and did not enter a plea as the offence is indictable. The prosecutor informed the court that Martinez has previously been accused of common assault and at that time, he was ordered by the magistrate to stay away from his ex as a condition of his bail, which has now been violated. Gonzalez argued that Martinez and the woman share two children and that he was their sole provider as the mother is not employed. But Senior Magistrate Ford decided against bail due to the breach and the serious nature of the offense and that Martinez in her view is likely to interfere with his accuser and/or other prosecution witnesses. He returns to court on August seventh.
